When someone starts collecting, one of the first questions they have is always: Why is this card more expensive than this one, even thought they are the same player? The answer can be a multitude of reasons, like a card being a parallel or a relic. But sometimes, they aren’t. Cards can be of the same player, from the same year, and even have the same picture, but still be worth vastly different amounts.
What Are Different Sets?
Every year, Topps makes multiples types of cards. These are sets. A set has a design, and certain players. For example, Topps Chrome is a set. Another set Topps makes is Topps Gallery. Topps Gallery has different players, and a different design. Sets can also have the same players as other sets, even a similar design, like the cards above. However, as long as they are released separately, or under a different name, they are different sets.
Why Are Some More Expensive Than Others?
The reason some sets are more expensive than others has a couple of ideas. 1st of all, when a set comes out, a certain number of boxes are made, meaning there is a certain number of cards. The less cards made, the more exclusive the sports cards are, and typically the more expensive they are. Secondly, recognizable cards are more expensive than others. A set like Topps Chrome, although having many cards, are still more valuable than others because they are the most established and recognizable baseball cards. These are the two main reasons why sets are different prices. If you want to know the price of individual cards, you can read this article.
